Explores shape changes in mechanical metamaterials, suggesting potential applications in robotics and medicine.
Studies of electromagnetic and mechanical metamaterials are, for the large part, two quite separate disciplines. Here, we explore the potential for using electromagnetic-derived forces to control the shape changes in a mechanical metamaterial system. Such shape-morphing materials have potential for use in many fields, including robotics, telecommunications and medicine. Recent work has shown mechanically adjustable frequency selectivity and antenna tunability through mechanically driven shape changes. Here, we explore a simple meta-atom chain structure where hinged joints connect each meta-atom to its two neighbours. We demonstrate the actuation of this simple mechanism by the application of electromagnetic signals, which propagate along the chain while generating torques about each hinge.
