A report highlights surgical excision of a rare suprameatal auricular pit in a child, indicating successful outcomes.
Auricular sinuses are prevalent congenital ear anomalies, and the preauricular sinus is the most common form. The occurrence of an auricular pit above the external auditory meatus is extremely rare. The aim of this report is to describe a rare variant of auricular pit and to highlight the techniques for complete surgical excision. A 5-year-old girl presented with an atypical pit on the right pinna since birth. There was no history of discharge from the pit, hearing loss, or other congenital anomalies. Examination of the ear showed a wide pit above the external auditory meatus; other otoscopic examinations were normal. Tympanometry and pure tone audiometric findings were normal. The pit and adjacent tissues were excised en bloc. The outcome of surgery was good; no complication or recurrence was noticed. The patient and the parents were satisfied with the aesthetic outcome. The suprameatal auricular pit is a new variant of the auricular sinus. It is unique because the tract is wider and shorter than the classical preauricular sinus, and it opens above the external auditory meatus.
