Case report shows community-acquired skin abscess caused by Morganella morganii in a healthy adult, suggesting emerging pathogenicity.
Morganella morganii is a gram-negative, non-lactosefermenting bacillus that belongs to the tribe Proteeae of the family Enterobacteriaceae. The Proteae tribe includes three important genera, Proteus, Providencia, and Morganella.Although part of normal human gut flora and well recognised in nosocomial settings, community-acquired disease is uncommon. It mainly causes urinary tract infections, abscesses, wound infections, and cellulitis, especially in elderly, post-operative, or immunocompromised patients.
