This study examines tropical aesthetics in Indonesia’s post-colonial era through two residential works designed by Oei Tjong An in 1961: Villa Riang and Paulus Sunarto’s House. Based on redrawn plans and elevations from field surveys and interviews, the research clarifies how these buildings integrate tropical responsiveness, modernist principles, and vernacular sensibilities. Analysis of open and semi-open spaces, roof types, shading devices, and varied openings reveals Oei’s response to the tropical climate while expressing cultural identity. Beyond environmental adaptation, the works embody post-independence aspirations aligned with the ideals of the New Emerging Forces in shaping an independent and progressive Indonesia.
