Retrospective study shows improvements in outcomes for malnourished inpatients after geriatric consultation, suggesting timely ONS use can help.
The aim of this retrospective study was to identify if malnutrition in older adults was linked to poor outcomes. A total of 327 inpatients aged ≥65 years who were referred for geriatric consultation were evaluated. At baseline, 56.8% received no nutritional support. After geriatric evaluation, 53% were started on oral nutrition supplements (ONS). In-hospital mortality was 14.1%. ONS use was associated with reduced mortality compared to nasogastric and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy feeding, and reduced length of hospital stay. Early geriatric consultation and timely ONS initiation was associated with improved outcomes for inpatients with malnutrition.
