Abstract Background Good nutrition is vital for health, productivity, and overall well-being, yet malnutrition remains a concern in many Nigerian communities due to socioeconomic constraints. Factors such as poverty, access to healthcare, clean water, and reliable health information influence nutritional outcomes. This study examined the socioeconomic determinants of nutritional status in Nsukka, Nigeria. Methods A cross-sectional survey of 322 individuals was conducted using structured questionnaires. Data covered income, health security, water access, and exposure to health and nutrition information, including internet use. Logistic regression was applied to identify factors influencing nutritional status. Results The study found widespread poverty and signs of poor nutrition among respondents. Poverty strongly predicted poor nutritional status, as low-income households struggled to afford diverse diets. Health security was significantly linked to better nutrition, indicating the importance of accessible healthcare. Access to health information and internet use were associated with improved nutritional awareness and outcomes. Clean water access also played a key role, with unsafe water sources linked to poorer nutrition. Conclusion Nutritional status in Nsukka is closely tied to socioeconomic conditions. Reducing poverty, strengthening healthcare access, improving water supply, and expanding access to nutrition information are essential for better nutrition outcomes. Integrated, multisectoral interventions are needed to sustainably improve community nutrition.
