This review examines patient populations with Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs) to investigate potential geographic disparities between rural and urban areas and their associated risks for driveline infections. Heart failure affects numerous Americans annually, and LVADs have emerged as a vital solution, particularly for those with end-stage heart failure. While these devices offer a lifeline, patients relying on LVAD support encounter challenges, including infections as a significant complication. Understanding the experiences of those with LVAD infections is crucial for delivering optimal care, considering the unique physical, psychological, and social challenges they face. Through a comprehensive literature search using the PubMed database, twelve articles were selected for systematic review and thematic analysis. The analysis indicates that rural LVAD patients may face heightened infection risks due to factors such as distance from care and socioeconomic disparities. This underscores the necessity for tailored interventions, urgent research focusing on telehealth, psychosocial aspects, and legislative solutions like the SAVE Act to enhance healthcare access for rural LVAD recipients. Addressing geographic-based disparities in LVAD-related infection risks demands innovative strategies and improved healthcare accessibility tailored to the complex needs of rural LVAD patients.
