Abstract

This study investigates the effect of agricultural innovations in mitigating the effects of climate change among members of agricultural cooperatives in Obingwa Local Government Area, Abia State, Nigeria. As rural farmers face increasing exposure to irregular rainfall and extreme weather events, the research focused on evaluating four key practices: water management techniques, adoption of climate-resistant crops, access to climate-related information, and agroforestry systems. A survey was conducted among 263 members across 20 registered agricultural cooperatives. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. The results revealed that 78% of respondents who adopted efficient water management practices, such as water harvesting and drip irrigation, reported greater resilience to drought and unpredictable rainfall. Additionally, 71% of farmers using climate-resilient crop varieties experienced improved yield stability. Access to timely climate information enhanced decision-making for 66% of participants, while 64% of those who practiced agroforestry reported benefits such as improved soil fertility and moisture retention. The study concludes that agricultural innovations significantly enhance smallholder farmers’ adaptive capacity to climate change when implemented through cooperative structures. It recommends expanding training on water management, providing improved seed varieties, strengthening extension services to ensure timely climate information, and promoting agroforestry practices through awareness and seedling distribution. These innovations, when adopted collectively, present a sustainable pathway to building climate resilience in rural agricultural communities
