Review highlights the role of MxA in diagnosing and managing systemic lupus erythematosus, indicating its potential utility as a biomarker.
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease that can be difficult to track and can be hard to diagnose early and assess treatment effectiveness. Myxovirus resistance protein A (MxA), a downstream effector of type I interferon (IFN-I) signaling, has become an interesting biomarker for SLE. Recent results have found that MxA expression is highly associated with SLE activity, and the specificity of MxA for IFN-I suggest it may be useful biomarker to early diagnose SLE and evaluate activity. This review reviews biological aspects, of MxA, its role in SLE pathology, and how MxA may be a useful biomarkener to diagnose. We review the clinical detection and its use to track flare-ups, and illustrate the ability of MxA to improve clinical assessment and guiding treatment in SLE.
