Trial trench evaluation confirms archaeological remains in an agricultural area, suggesting historical significance.
Fifty-five trenches measuring 30m x 1.8m have been situated within the Site to assess the potential for surviving archaeological remains which may be disturbed by the works are proposed. The trenches have been located to target geophysical anomalies as well as blank areas. The archaeological trial trench evaluation was successful in confirming the presence of archaeological remains as identified in the geophysical survey. These anomalies were targeted within Trenches 19, 22, 36 and 38. Artefactual evidence supports the idea of agricultural occupation from the post medieval period. Desk based assessment and old Ordnance Survey maps confirm the ditches present in Trenches 19, 22, 38 and 48 were old field boundaries. The land has been continuously used for agricultural purposes and is still used as grazing for cattle belonging to Woodside Farm.
