Investigates heat transfer in brake discs using a numerical model, indicating airflow influences on thermal behavior.
This study investigates the numerical coupling of heat transfer and turbulent flow on a disc and brake pad. First, a comprehensive numerical model for simulating the heat transfer coupling is developed. The model is then verified with experimental values from the literature, with a particular focus on the convective heat transfer coefficient. Subsequently, a real-life disc and brake pad are presented to illustrate the discrepancies between the experimental correlations and the numerical model. The presence of a fixed brake pad has been shown to influence the airflow around the disc, leading to the formation of vortices and making the airflow around the disc unpredictable. This, in turn, has been demonstrated to result in significantly different heat transfer coefficients compared to the experimental values.
