Commentary highlights the significance of symptoms over external criteria in diagnostic measurement, emphasizing redundancy.
Fisher's (see record 2026-72441-001) results clearly illustrate the redundancy of symptom criteria in current diagnostic definitions, as it pertains to information about external criteria. External criteria are by definition extraneous to the psychopathology variable of interest, however, and changeable depending on the scenario. Redundancy and informativeness with regard to the symptoms themselves are perhaps of greater importance, as they are central to the measurement process and its interpretation.
