Effect of coffee solution on colour stability of various clear aligner attachment composites, does surface sealing make a difference?: An in vitro study
In vitro study evaluates colour stability of resin composites in coffee solution, revealing implications for orthodontic care.
Key Points
This study investigates how a surface sealant affects the colour stability of orthodontic composites when exposed to coffee solution.
96 resin composite specimens (24 per group) were prepared using four different types: Aligner Connect, Estelite Sigma Quick, Universal Flo, and Transbond XT.
Each composite group was divided into two subgroups (12 each), one with a surface sealant (Permaseal) and one as a control.
Specimens were immersed in coffee solution for colour measurement at 1, 3, and 6 months using the CIEDE2000 formula.
All resin composites exhibited significant discolouration over time (p < 0.05).
Transbond XT showed the greatest discolouration with ∆E₀₀ of 13.57 ± 0.77 at 6 months.
All composites surpassed the clinically acceptable discolouration threshold of 1.8, and the surface sealant did not enhance colour stability.
