Review highlights the significance of rare shoulder joint neuropathies and their clinical management implications.
Peripheral neuropathies around the shoulder joint are relatively rare but clinically significant, as delayed diagnosis can lead to serious functional impairment. This review summarizes the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of three important but uncommon neuropathic conditions around the shoulder joint-(1) hourglass-like constriction neuropathy, (2) compressive neuropathy caused by paralabral cysts, and (3) perineural tumor spread-based on a literature review and clinical experience. The aim of this review is to reduce misdiagnosis and facilitate appropriate management by actively considering these rare neuropathies in patients presenting with unexplained shoulder pain and muscle weakness.
