Randomized trial identifies a candidate gene for bacterial wilt resistance in peanut, suggesting avenues for breeding.
The objective of this study was to characterize genetic resistance to bacterial wilt (BW) of peanut caused by Ralstonia solanacearum . We fine–mapped qBWA12 , a major quantitative trait locus for BW resistance, and identified AhBWR1, which encodes a CC–NBS–LRR protein, as the most likely candidate gene. Interaction studies revealed self–association of the AhBWR1 CC domain and its interaction with MYB56, GRAS and a pentatricopeptide repeat protein. A polymorphism at locus A12_4,323,949 permitted selecting BW–resistant accessions from a peanut germplasm collection of 325 accessions. AhBWR1 could be used to breed novel disease–resistant cultivars.
