Does a totally thoracoscopic approach provide a safe and effective alternative to full sternotomy for the removal of primary cardiac tumors?
A totally thoracoscopic approach is a promising, minimally invasive alternative to full sternotomy for the removal of benign cardiac tumors, provided surgeons have adequate skills.
Primary cardiac tumors are mostly rare and of benign nature. In this study we reported the results of surgical removal of cardiac tumors through a totally thoracoscopic approach in four patients. The early results of this series suggest that minimally invasive endoscopic cardiac surgery is a promising alternative approach to full sternotomy for surgical removal of benign cardiac tumors. The safety and efficacy of this technically demanding technique may be reproducible provided that surgeons have adequate skills in thoracoscopic cardiac surgery.
Mastroiacovo et al. (Mon,) conducted a case report in Benign cardiac tumors (n=4). Minimally invasive endoscopic cardiac surgery was evaluated on Early surgical outcomes and safety. Minimally invasive endoscopic cardiac surgery for the removal of benign cardiac tumors was feasible and safe, with all four patients experiencing successful early outcomes and no major adverse events.
