Investigates energy efficiency and QoS trade-offs in VoLTE mobility using scheduling algorithms.
LTE and LTE-Advanced are “true-4G” telecommunication standards that are delivering its users with unprecedented bandwidth for data download and minimal latency, leading to the widespread use of data-heavy Smartphone applications like Skype, YouTube and Interactive video gaming. This in turn has necessitated the development of energy efficient delivery algorithms in 4 G standardizations, in-order to prolong battery life, plus further support for various other services. 3 rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has proposed Discontinuous reception (DRX) power saving method; the latter being already implemented in the user equipment (UE) to maximize energy efficiency. However, the tradeoff to higher energy efficiency is lower Quality of Service (QoS). Also of interest is the scheduling algorithm that is responsible for resource allocation to the UE. We simulate the Dynamic and Semi-Persistent Scheduling (SPS) schemes in conjunction with fixed and variable DRX parameter for Voice over IP (VoIP) traffic. We investigate in this paper, the effects of the two aforementioned scheduling schemes and the various lengths of DRX light and deep sleep cycles on the Quality of Service (QoS) for the end user. The simulated results are then analyzed for the packet loss Rate, Packet delay and System energy consumption with the hope of finding the optimum combination for the tradeoff between energy efficiency and various QoS parameters.
