This study investigates the barriers to and solutions for integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into journalism education in Vietnam. Motivated by the increasing necessity of technological proficiency in journalism and the limited understanding of AI’s educational implications within the Vietnamese context, this qualitative research employed in-depth interviews with 11 lecturers and 19 undergraduate students from universities in Hanoi. Thematic analysis revealed five significant barriers: diminished critical thinking, reduced capacity to evaluate AI-generated content, eroded communication skills, academic integrity violations, and institutional policy deficiencies. Key solutions proposed include promoting responsible AI use, revising assessment methods, enhancing critical thinking through practical tasks, faculty capacity building, and the establishment of clear institutional policies. Theoretically, these findings validate and inform an extension of the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework by incorporating Ethical Knowledge and Institutional/Policy Knowledge as empirically motivated domains. This study contributes both theoretically and practically to journalism education by suggesting actionable pathways to harness AI’s educational potential responsibly and sustainably.
