Philosophical analysis explores Peirce's propositions in Russell and Wittgenstein, revealing connections and implications.
I develop Margaret Macdonald’s interpretation of Charles Peirce’s theory of signs by recovering her treatment of Peirce’s proposition (or dicisign) and its application to both Bertrand Russell’s theory of judgement and Ludwig Wittgenstein’s picture theory. The result both deepens our understanding of Macdonald’s early philosophical output and sheds new light on the relevance of Peirce’s semiotics to issues concerning the proposition in early analytic philosophy.
