Communication reports how sodium ionophores efficiently extract lithium from complex salt mixtures, suggesting a new recovery strategy.
Growing demand for lithium calls for new strategies to recover this critical metal from complex salt mixtures. In the Communication e3249075, Kajetan Dąbrowa and co-workers repurpose long-known sodium ionophores as lithium-selective extractants. Hydration-assisted binding enables efficient and selective transfer of hydrated LiCl into an organic phase despite large excesses of Na, K, and Mg chlorides. Image by Karolina Suchan-Okulska.
