Case study examines performance voting influence on electoral choices in Taiwan, indicating complex voting motivations.
This study examines the influence of performance assessments on voting behavior in Taiwan's 2024 presidential election. Drawing on cross-sectional and panel survey data, we find evidence of performance voting. Additionally, candidate evaluation and presidential approval emerge as strong predictors of vote choice, underscoring the continuing relevance of electoral accountability. These findings suggest that identity-based voting does not eliminate instrumental evaluation, but coexists with it. This extends the scope of performance voting theory to highly structured and polarized electoral environments.
