The idea of restoring Arctic sea ice with millions of wind-powered pumps has resurfaced in public discussion. This analytical article examines the concept's arithmetic: at ~100 000 m³ of ice per pump per season, offsetting the current net loss of ~300 km³/year would require ~3 million marine units and ~150 billion USD of CAPEX, with 30–40 billion USD in perpetual annual costs — while summer melt erodes the winter gains and no payer exists for a public good with no owner. The article contrasts this brute-force approach with atmospheric ionization (SkyManager technology in SnowQueen mode), which triggers natural precipitation using moisture already present in the atmosphere, delivering snow at ~3.5 euro cents per m³ for territorial customers with real cash flows: hydropower, agriculture, glacier tourism and water security.
