Qualitative interviews uncover distinct sexual values among female sex buyers, indicating cultural shifts and implications for intimacy.
Objective This study examines the sexual values of female sex buyers in China, aiming to categorize their value systems and explore the underlying motivations and influencing factors behind their engagement in commercial sex.Method Based on in-depth interviews with 27 female sex buyers recruited through social media platforms and snowball sampling, qualitative data were analyzed to identify key themes and patterns related to sexual values and behaviors. Results Participants’ sexual values were divided into two paradigms: “detaching sex from love” and “integrating sex with love.” The majority embraced the former, viewing sex as independent of emotional commitment and citing motivations such as physiological satisfaction, empowerment, and sexual diversification. Approximately one-third adhered to the traditional “integrating” paradigm, believing sex should only occur within committed relationships. Values were shaped interactively by individual needs, family background, and relationship history. The positive experiences women gained from purchasing sex were predominant, including physiological release, psychological satisfaction, enhanced sense of control, and expanded self-boundaries. At the same time, this behavior also brought negative consequences for sexual well-being: among those holding the “detaching sex from love” value, negative impacts included avoidance of traditional intimate relationships, raised expectations of sexual behavior, and increased frequency of changing partners; among those holding the “integrating sex with love” value, negative impacts included emotional dependence, indulgence in illusory romantic fantasies, and consequent exploitation both emotionally and financially. Conclusion The study reveals a coexistence of contrasting sexual values among female sex buyers in China, reflecting broader socio-cultural transitions. Aligning sexual practices with personal values poses structural challenges in a rapidly changing society, highlighting the need for deeper understanding and nuanced discourse on gender, sexuality, and intimacy in contemporary China. There is an urgent practical need to actively explore sexual values that can adapt to the needs of a rapidly transforming society through dialogue and public debate, to establish sexual values that can better guide sexual practice, and to promote the overall improvement of sexual well-being.
