Case report reveals a rare ankle condition causing pain and swelling, indicating the importance of accurate diagnosis.
Extra-articular synovial chondromatosis of the ankle is extremely rare and often mimics other benign calcified soft-tissue lesions. We report a 42-year-old woman with lateral ankle pain and swelling, in whom radiographs, magnetic resonance imaging, and computed tomography demonstrated a calcified subcutaneous mass. Surgical excision and histopathology confirmed the diagnosis. The patient remained symptom-free with no recurrence at follow-up.
