White paper discusses sustainable innovation ecosystems in Europe, highlighting policy implications and collaboration.
Over the past decade, Europe has increasingly recognized that sci-entific excellence alone is insufficient to address complex societaland technological challenges. Lasting innovation depends on trustedecosystems that connect research, education, industry, entrepreneur-ship, and public institutions across national boundaries.Drawing on ten years of experience with the German-FrenchAcademy for the Industry of the Future (GFA), this white paperreflects on how sustainable innovation ecosystems emerge, what dis-tinguishes them from traditional project-based collaborations, andwhich lessons can inform future European research and innovationpolicy. The white paper addresses the following topics:• European Innovation Ecosystems• Franco-German research collaboration• Ecosystem building through research, education, and innovation• Long-term community building and international partnerships• Policy recommendations for strengthening European InnovationEcosystemsRather than presenting a historical account of the Academy alone, the white paper develops a broader framework for understandingecosystem building and argues that Europe’s future competitivenessdepends on investing not only in excellent research, but also in thepeople, institutions, and long-term relationships that enable scientificexcellence to create lasting societal impact.
