Philosophical coda explores cosmology and the nature of measured life, highlighting key concepts.
On Returning is a short philosophical coda to the On ——ing series, written after the series finale (On Completing). It revisits the author's cosmological framework — the L(t) functional of "legible traces" and "jays" (aligned lives leaving coherent marks across time) — through a disciplined encounter with speculative physics. The essay entertains, and ultimately declines, three tempting identifications: the tachyon as a "jay"; dark matter as an agent of incoherence; and the conflation of dark matter with antimatter and with the nuclear force. Drawing on the modern reinterpretation of tachyonic mass as vacuum instability — the Higgs mechanism's "hilltop-to-valley" picture — and on the cold, structure-forming role of dark matter in ΛCDM cosmology, the piece argues that the framework's own device, arg(L) (the complex phase encoding Intent), already supplies what the borrowed particles seemed to offer. The seam between physical and representational uses of imaginary quantities is kept visible throughout. The coda closes by "setting down the ruler": distinguishing the measured life from the life spent measuring, and choosing the latter. The essay also models intellectual honesty about amateur error, correcting its own confusion of distinct physical dualities in view of the reader.
