Direct electrochemical synthesis develops tetrahydroisoquinolines using Shono-type oxidation, indicating efficient methods for complex molecules.
Direct electrochemical access to the valuable tetrahydroisoquinoline scaffold has been developed. In a simple undivided setup using inexpensive, reusable electrodes, amides are transformed via Shono-type oxidation into multisubstituted tetrahydroisoquinolines. A broad scope with 34 examples containing electron-poor and heterocyclic substrates was synthesized. Additionally, access to the benzazepine scaffold could also be realized in this way.
