Assesses the transition to green shipping in ASEAN countries, highlighting key strategies for sustainable maritime development.
This study assesses and compares the transition to green shipping in five selected ASEAN countries (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia) during 2020–2025. The article employs a qualitative comparative analysis based on academic literature, official documents, and international policy papers, guided by sustainable transition theory. The study synthesises and analyzes the progress of green shipping development across these nations, focusing mainly on policies, institutional frameworks, technological advancements, and international cooperation. The study shows that the selected ASEAN countries can promote the green shipping transition through three main pillars: regional cooperation and technology sharing, strengthening financial and policy innovation, and human capacity development and digitalisation of emission monitoring systems. This paper contributes to regional maritime research by providing a comparative perspective on the level of policy maturity and implementation challenges and offers insights into integrated strategies to achieve low-carbon shipping that promotes sustainable maritime development in the region.
