Abstract The aim of this paper is to reconstruct Od. 19.54 as a Mycenaean hexameter and to project the entire line back into the Greek of the 2nd millennium. Some metrical irregularities of Homeric verses can be solved through a retrojection to an older linguistic layer. In order to demonstrate this claim, the textual data are compared with Mycenaean tablets, iconographical representations and archeological artifacts (signet rings, furniture) dating back to the late Helladic (Pylos) period.
