Comprehensive review identifies effective sexting education strategies for LGBTQIA+ youth, suggesting necessary enhancements in programming.
Sexting has become a critical topic within comprehensive sexuality education programmes for youth. While some studies have evaluated the efficacy and effectiveness of sexting education initiatives, others offer recommendations aimed at mitigating the negative consequences associated with this behaviour. However, there is a notable gap in research that explicitly addresses LGBTQIA+ adolescents – a group that experiences higher rates of violence and health disparities and is more likely to engage in sexting than their cisgender heterosexual peers, while also uniquely using digital spaces as important sites of connection, identity exploration, and self-expression. This article reviews research on sexting behaviours and educational approaches and identifies key concepts relevant to LGBTQIA+ young people’s distinct experiences and needs. Drawing on research and educational design principles, the article outlines best practices and educational strategies for incorporating these concepts into LGBTQIA+-inclusive sexuality education programmes.
