Recent studies reveal structural features of an organic solute transporter crucial for bile acid efflux and metabolism.
In two recent Nature studies, Yang et al. and Wang et al. independently revealed that human organic solute transporter alpha-beta (OSTαβ) is a lipid-tuned bile acid exporter with a previously unrecognized fold and a lateral-access transport pathway. These findings provide a structural framework for understanding basolateral bile acid efflux in the enterohepatic circulation and its relevance to metabolic signaling, cholestatic disease, and therapeutic targeting. 1 , 2
