Longitudinal analysis reveals that music in quality TV enhances commercial success of indie albums, suggesting a fruitful intersection of industries.
In this study, we examine the relationship between the success of independent music albums and their presence in TV series episodes. Building on literature about creative and cultural fields, originally conceived as contested arenas shaped by the tension between artistic and commercial logics, we explore how convergence between fields and media can create opportunities for integrating aesthetic and market capital. Our research questions were addressed through a historical account of the evolution of the two fields and a longitudinal dataset covering all indie rock and indie pop albums released in the United States from 2013 to 2018. The final dataset comprised 789 albums, tracked annually, yielding 3.606 collapsed observations. The findings show that the synchronisation of independent music in quality TV series contributes to its commercial success by increasing visibility and boosting chart performance. This study offers insights into how, through synchronisation, the fields of quality television and independent music intersect—allowing independent music to reach the broader audience of prestige TV while preserving its authenticity.
