Randomized trial explores AI integration for improved navigation training, suggesting better methods for maritime education.
In the context of increasing automation and digitalization of maritime transport, the role of the deck officer is undergoing a profound transformation. The modern navigation bridge is no longer merely a place for manual ship handling, but an integrated system of electronic devices, sensors, and software that requires a high level of technological literacy and situational awareness. To meet these requirements, maritime education must evolve in parallel with technological innovation by providing realistic and dynamic training in a safe environment. The purpose of this study is to explore the possibilities for integrating artificial intelligence into navigation simulators in order to improve the quality of maritime navigation training. Artificial intelligence can be applied to model the behavior of other vessels in the simulation, to evaluate the trainee’s actions in accordance with the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs), and to automatically adapt the difficulty level of training scenarios.
