Forensic analysis reveals genetic and cultural impacts of Aryan migrations in South Asia, suggesting historical continuity.
This book asks how a climatic perturbation on the Eurasian steppe helped to set in motion the last great dispersal of pastoralists into South Asia, and how that movement shaped both the world of the Rigveda and the genetic landscape of modern South Asians. The so‑called “Aryan question” has long been cast as a contest of narratives—invaders versus indigenes, rupture versus continuity—but recent advances in paleoclimate science, archaeology, ancient DNA (aDNA), and philology now permit it to be treated as a problem in historical forensics rather than as a field of ideological skirmish. The purpose of this volume is not to rehearse inherited positions, but to reconstruct, as rigorously as our evidence allows, what happened, when, and with what consequences for language, culture, and identity. As a geologist, I have long been fascinated by the great thresholds of Earth history: the mass extinctions that punctuate the Phanerozoic, the Quaternary oscillations of ice and sea, and the megadroughts that redraw, from time to time, the habitable map of the planet. The question of how complex biotas and civilizations accommodate such shocks has never been for me merely a matter of detached curiosity. During the Covid‑19 pandemic—when cities lay under a strange hush, sirens rose and fell like a dark litany, and many of us quite literally “kept house” under orders of confinement—it was difficult not to see our present disquiet against the longer canvas of climatic and epidemiological crises. In those months of enforced seclusion, when the world seemed to hold its breath, I repeatedly imagined the 4.2 ka megadrought: monsoon belts slipping southward, rivers dwindling season by season, and the great Bronze Age societies of the Indus, BMAC, Akkad, and the Old Kingdom feeling the ground, quite literally, shift beneath their feet. It was in that juxtaposition—between our own season of lockdown and an ancient age of desiccation—that this inquiry took shape.
