Survey reveals a new cave-dwelling Pseudosinella species, enhancing understanding of biodiversity in Brazil.
Herein, a new species of Pseudosinella is described from Minas Gerais State, Brazil. This was possible after reanalysing six species similar to the new species: Pseudosinella alfanjeunguiculata Bellini, Cipola & Souza; Pseudosinella aphelabiata Bellini, Cipola & Souza; Pseudosinella diamantinensis Bellini, Cipola & Souza, 2020; Pseudosinella marianensis Bellini, Cipola & Souza, 2020; Pseudosinella spurimariana Bellini, Cipola & Souza, 2020; and Pseudosinella pusilla Oliveira, Brito & Cipola, 2020. We provide a complementary diagnosis and illustrations for the congeners of new species. They mainly share the absence of pigments, eyes and apical bulb in fourth antenna segment, prelabral chaetae undivided, head macrochaetotaxy reduced, Th II–Abd IV with 0, 0|0, 1 and 0 central macrochaetae and unguiculus outer lamella acuminate (toothless). Pseudosinella cruspinata Cipola, Cordova‐Hernandez & Viana, sp. nov. differs from these species by labial proximal chaetae, prelabral and labral p series chaetae discreetly ciliate; labial fields with a1–5, m2, e, l1–2 discreetly ciliate and M1 ciliate, Abd IV with 3 central mac, unguiculus inner lamellae acuminate and outer incomplete. Still, two new characteristics for the genus are revealed for the first time: complete pattern of body pseudopores and spines distribution of legs. Currently, the state of Minas Gerais has 21 Pseudosinella species registered, and the Brazil has 28 species without eyes, of which 17 have the unguiculus outer lamella acuminate. We hope that the data provided here will be useful in strengthening public policies aimed at conserving Brazilian biodiversity, because the new species, as well as its congeners, are known from their type localities or few caves.
