This essay examines the psychological consequences of delegating decisions and tasks to autonomous AI agents. As agentic systems increasingly handle activities that once required direct human action, such as booking travel, drafting communications, managing schedules, and making purchasing decisions, users are progressively removed from the tasks themselves. Drawing on established research in sense of agency, self-determination theory, automation complacency, trust calibration, and cognitive offloading, the paper argues that this removal is not psychologically neutral. The same automation that reduces friction and effort can also erode a user's sense of ownership, practised skill, and satisfaction with outcomes. Evidence from the IKEA effect, GPS-mediated navigation, and AI-assisted writing suggests this tension is more than theoretical. The essay concludes with design principles, including preserved user involvement at key decision points, transparency into agent reasoning, and deliberate cognitive forcing functions, aimed at retaining the psychological benefits of personal involvement without giving up the efficiency gains of agentic systems. This manuscript synthesises existing literature and does not report original experimental results.
