Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) enhances educational tools through machine learning and deep learning advancements. GenAI-powered tools reduce educators’ workloads and provide students with feedback on academic progress. However, limited research exists on students’ perceptions of AI-generated feedback. This study explores the role of AI-generated systems in improving feedback practices in online learning, addressing three questions: (1) the role of AI-generated feedback in students’ cognitive and emotional development (2) students’ preferences for AI-generated versus teacher-provided feedback, and (3) students’ expectations of AI-generated feedback. This systematic review reveals that higher education students value AI-generated feedback for its cognitive and emotional benefits, though opinions differ on its superiority over teacher feedback. Some prefer teacher feedback, others favour AI, and many advocate for combining both. Students expressed a wide range of expectations for AI-generated feedback and demonstrated a clear preference for feedback that was detailed, constructive, and context-sensitive.
