This study seeks to elucidate the initiation of a Mental Health Institute’s digital transformation and to outline the problems faced. The study reports a case analysis of the Vidyasagar Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Allied Sciences (VIMHANS), which was undergoing a technological shift in service delivery due to the pandemic. The qualitative findings identified organizational challenges in executing the digital shift for service delivery in academic and clinical settings. The primary challenges faced by the mental health institutions in the context of digital transformation include a lack of e-mental health initiatives, an absence of e-mental health governance, and inadequate e-mental health responsiveness. The study articulates these three interrelated challenges in connection with its principal conclusion: achieving sustainable digital transformation within mental health institutions necessitates addressing them. Failure to adequately confront these foundational issues may result in digital initiatives that are fragmented, unsustainable, or misaligned with the overarching objectives of mental health services. The study analyzes key findings and highlights paradoxes in the digital transformation journey of MHIs thereby informing the development of targeted policy components to support effective digital transition.
