Kharkiv is considered the capital of Ukrainian constructivism. The article is devoted to one of the landmark objects of the new governmental centre — Svobody Square and Zadzagrypromya — the Tabachnyk residential complex, which was subjected to a missile attack on 2 January 2024 by Russia. The main objective of the study is to problematise the attitude to the architecture of Ukrainian modernism across the period of 1925 and 1935, which is currently characterised as ‘problematic heritage’. The ways of its preservation are discussed. The article uses semiotic methods of research to reveal the meanings, values, and symbolic forms of avant-garde architecture of Ukrainian modernism conditioned by the ideological doctrine of the early period of construction of socialism in the USSR, and to explain the contemporary problems of interpretation of these meanings. Modernist architecture of Ukraine is considered as a multivalent phenomenon that shaped the language and vocabulary of avant-garde architectural forms. The Tabachnyk residential complex is an authentic element of the cultural landscape of the Zaderzhpromya ensemble and one of the typical objects of the modernist era in Kharkiv. Its artistic value as an artifact of modernist culture has suffered both physically and mentally. It is a significant element of the identity of the Kharkiv city fabric and an integral element of the historical memory of the citizens.
