Completion note addresses the flagged gap in SU(2) spin algebra derivation in quantum mechanics, suggesting a closure using established metrics.
=== STATUS === COMPLETION NOTE (T283). NO new physics and NO new mathematics claimed. Discharges a gap T203 flagged in its own status table: "Spin-1/2 as U(1) Cartan half-cycle — Physical interpretation; geometric correspondence clear but NOT REDUCED TO AN ALGEBRAIC IDENTITY." Diagnosis: the U(1) Cartan route is structurally blocked (U(1) is abelian; no abelian generator yields non-abelian commutators). Derivation: the algebra follows from the Clifford structure T203 ALREADY proved is forced by the 4_grav sector of E8 (T167). All nine commutators verified numerically; Casimir 3/4 = s(s+1) at s = 1/2. Stern-Gerlach follows: exactly two beams (space quantization); sequential 50/50 restoration from [S_z,S_x] != 0. A trap is explicitly rejected: E8's internal SU(2)xE7 su(2) is NOT the spin su(2). The Stern-Gerlach MECHANISM remains open. T203 (10.5281/zenodo.19635879) closed the PUH quantum-mechanics chain (de Broglie T187, Heisenberg T188, Schrodinger T191, pilot wave T199, Klein-Gordon and Dirac T203). Its Section 9 status table records, verbatim, against "Spin-1/2 as U(1) Cartan half-cycle": "Physical interpretation; geometric correspondence clear but not reduced to an algebraic identity." T203 knew it had a picture, not a proof, and said so in print. This note discharges that flag. THE DIAGNOSIS. The filed route could not have arrived, for a structural reason: [S_i,S_j] = i eps_ijk S_k is NON-ABELIAN and needs three non-commuting generators; a U(1) has ONE generator, which commutes with itself. The U(1) Cartan half-cycle argument can deliver the double-cover PHASE (the -1 under 2pi — an S_z-eigenvalue statement, which T203 verified) but cannot in principle deliver the commutators. The gap was not a missing calculation along the filed route; it was a missing route. THE DERIVATION. T203's own Theorem 2 establishes that the Clifford algebra {gamma^mu, gamma^nu} = 2 eta^mu-nu is FORCED by the E8 rank decomposition 8 = 4_grav + 1_EM + 3_colour (T167) — the four spacetime tangent directions are the projection of E8's rank-8 Cartan subalgebra onto the 4_grav sector. That structure is non-abelian by construction and is exactly what an su(2) requires. Building all three generators S_i = (1/2) eps_ijk (i/4)[gamma_j, gamma_k]: all NINE commutators satisfy [S_i,S_j] = i eps_ijk S_k exactly (verified numerically); Casimir S^2 = 3/4 = s(s+1) at s = 1/2; S_z eigenvalues exactly +/-1/2; exp(-2pi i S_z) = -I recovered as a COROLLARY of the algebra rather than a standalone numerical check. T203 constructed ONE spin generator (S_12) and its eigenvalues; it never took the commutator of two. That single step is the whole of this note. THEOREM 283: the su(2) spin algebra of PUH's E8 vortex is the rotation subalgebra of the 4_grav Clifford structure; T203's U(1) Cartan is recognised as the CARTAN SUBALGEBRA (S_z direction) of that su(2) — which is exactly why it could carry the phase and nothing more. STERN-GERLACH FOLLOWS. (1) 1922, space quantization (Gerlach & Stern, Z. Phys. 9, 349): the beam splits into exactly TWO. In PUH this is now forced — S_z has exactly two eigenvalues on the spinor representation; the number of beams is the dimension of the representation, fixed by the 4_grav Clifford structure. The magnet's role is to select the quantization direction (the field is a U(1) Cartan phase mode, T167). (Note: the 1922 experiment is often loosely credited with showing uncertainty; it did not — that lesson belongs to the later sequential arrangements.) (2) SEQUENTIAL Stern-Gerlach, which is the experiment that actually tests the ALGEBRA: prepare S_z = +1/2, measure S_x -> 50/50; take S_x = +1/2 and measure S_z again -> 50/50 RESTORED (both verified numerically). Cause: [S_z,S_x] != 0. PUH previously derived the HEISENBERG algebra (T188) — but sequential Stern-Gerlach does not test that algebra; it tests the SPIN algebra, which PUH did not have. It now does. A TRAP IDENTIFIED AND REJECTED. E8's maximal subalgebra SU(2) x E7 gives 248 = (3,1) + (1,133) + (2,56) (verified: 3 + 133 + 112 = 248) — an su(2) adjoint and 56 doublets, invitingly placed. This is NOT the spin su(2). Spin is a SPACETIME quantum number (the rep of the rotation group); that su(2) is an INTERNAL symmetry. Shared name, different object — the error the McKay-Koide corrigendum was filed to correct and that T278's 30 = 3x10 flag was written to avoid. INCIDENTAL FLAG (provisional, not asserted). T167's equation (1) as it appears in the corpus text reads 248 = (133,0)+(1,0)+(56,+1)+(56,-1), which sums to 246, not 248; the complete E7 x U(1) branching needs two further singlets (1₊₂, 1₋₂). This may be a text-extraction artifact and MUST be checked against T167's filed PDF before any correction. If real, it is corrigendum-class and affects no result of T167. WHAT REMAINS OPEN — THE MECHANISM. The algebra is closed; the Stern-Gerlach mechanism is not. (i) The COUPLING: how a vortex's magnetic moment couples to a field GRADIENT (Cartan-to-Cartan is natural in PUH, but naturalness is not derivation). (ii) The SPLITTING: how a localised vortex physically separates into two beams — T187's double-slit account does not transfer. (iii) The MEASUREMENT CLASS: T187 resolves measurement as vortex ABSORPTION, but Stern-Gerlach does not absorb the atom — it survives, spin now correlated with position. This entangling, non-destructive measurement is untreated in PUH, and is arguably the most interesting question this note surfaces. NOT CLAIMED: any new mathematics (the Clifford-to-su(2) construction is standard since Dirac 1928 — the contribution is archival: locating a flagged gap, diagnosing it, closing it with PUH's own already-derived ingredients); that the internal su(2) is the spin su(2); the Stern-Gerlach force law, beam splitting, or measurement class; the electron g-factor (T203 already placed it out of scope); or any change to the experimental predictions of quantum mechanics — spin-1/2 behaves in PUH exactly as in standard QM. The claim is only that PUH now DERIVES the algebra it previously interpreted.
