Garrison Lecture explores the historical impact of infectious diseases in Europe, highlighting significant events.
This lecture was delivered on 5 June 2026 to the American Association for the History of Medicine (AAHM) meeting as the Garrison Lecture. The Garrison is an endowed, invitational lecture, and arrangements were made more than a year in advance to record the lecture and have the video posted on the AAHM's YouTube channel. Unfortunately, the tech equipment at the venue captured only garbled audio. This transcript was produced on 11 July 2026, by me, from a "scrubbed" audio file and automated transcript kindly provided to me by Will Beatty, co-creator and editor of the Multicultural Middle Ages podcast, and the Meeting in the Middle Ages podcast. I have also used the videotape of the talk that was posted on the AAHM's YouTube webpage for comparison. This transcript should therefore be considered the version-of-record. Separately, a bibliography of works cited in the talk as well as a copy of the slides themselves have been posted on my Knowledge Commons page, https://hcommons.org/members/mhgreen2/. Please direct any questions about this transcript or the talk itself to me, Monica H. Green, monica.h.green@gmail.com. Questions about the YouTube video should be directed to the AAHM.
