This essay joins efforts to diversify family communication research with a focus on spirituality. Little is known about how spirituality can strengthen and/or harm family bonds across the globe. This essay draws on feminist and relational spirituality to conceptualize “Taoist family spirituality” in the case of Minnan-speaking Taiwanese families. Informed by autoethnography and family conversations, Taoist family spirituality is conceptualized as a home-based spiritual quest co-constituted in family practices and characterized by homegrown, ecological harmony, and cosmic justice. Taoist family spirituality offers new directions for rethinking spirituality and family communication.
