Abstract Molecular heterogeneity of receptors, ion channels, transport and other proteins is one of the bases for their functional diversity. The localization of different molecular forms of the protein in spatially distinct subcellular compartments with specialized interactions with the molecular environment also significantly expands their functional spectrum. This review illustrates the progress of research in this area using the example of the molecular and functional diversity of the vital transport protein Na,K-ATPase (NKA) in skeletal muscle. The review is based on an analysis of the accumulated literature and summarizes the results of studies in which the author has been directly involved over the past 25 years.
