Key result
Interstage digoxin is linked to preserved RV ejection fraction and attenuated end-systolic remodeling.
Why the study?
The association between digoxin use and echocardiographic indices of cardiac function in infants with single-ventricle congenital heart disease during the interstage period was unknown.
Does digoxin improve cardiac function in infants with single-ventricle congenital heart disease during the interstage period?
Cohort (n=373)
Yes
Does digoxin improve cardiac function in infants with single-ventricle congenital heart disease during the interstage period?
Digoxin use may partially mitigate the expected decline in right ventricular systolic function and dilatation during the interstage period in infants with single-ventricle congenital heart disease.
Digoxin was associated with attenuated RV remodeling in interstage single-ventricle infants; leaves open whether it improves outcomes pending prospective trials.

Kumar et al. (2022) conducted a cohort in Single-ventricle congenital heart disease (n=373). Digoxin vs. No digoxin was evaluated on Change in end-systolic volume during the interstage period (β = -8.17, 95% CI -15.59 to -0.74, p=0.03). Digoxin exposure during the interstage period was associated with a smaller increase in right ventricular end-systolic volume (β = -8.17, p=0.03) and a smaller decrease in ejection fraction.
