Abstract This paper translates Freud’s tripartite model (Id, Ego, Superego) into the language of modern neuroscience, grounding it in Darwin’s theory of social instincts. The Id corresponds to the individual instinct circuit (dopamine system), the Superego to the social instinct circuit (oxytocin + medial prefrontal cortex), and the Ego to the prefrontal executive functions. When the Id’s desire is blocked by the Superego, the Restorative Instinct (anxiety circuit: locus coeruleus + BNST) is activated as an “appeal” mechanism, consuming cognitive resources and causing rumination. Prolonged failure of the Ego to mediate leads to lateral habenula burst firing and depression. The paper further discusses the “transparent circuit” of desire, the distinction between ordinary instinct blocks and the blockage of the Desire for Dao, and practical implications such as “stay away from temptations.” It concludes that understanding the neural basis of Freudian conflict offers new insights into anxiety, depression, and self‑regulation.
