While ICDs are life-saving for children with life-threatening arrhythmias, their use requires novel implantation approaches and careful case selection due to anatomic limitations and potential for significant morbidity.
Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD) have become an integral component in the management of children with life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias complicating a variety of different inherited and congenital cardiovascular conditions. Implantation often requires novel approaches and configurations to overcome the size and anatomic limitations posed by many children needing ICDs. While their use has undoubtedly saved many lives, ICD use may be associated with significant morbidity, so detailed case selection and individualised postimplant programming is critical.

DeWitt et al. (2014) conducted a review in Life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias in inherited and congenital cardiovascular conditions. Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD) was evaluated. Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators are life-saving in children with life-threatening arrhythmias, but require novel implantation approaches and careful case selection due to significant morbidity.
