Quantitative and qualitative exploration finds obstetric violence predicts postpartum anxiety and depression, indicating important psychosocial implications.
The present study investigates the impact of obstetric violence (OV) on postpartum psychosocial health using both quantitative and qualitative methods, drawing from a subset of data (N = 339) collected through an online survey. Additionally, self-compassion and medical mistrust were examined as potential protective and risk factors through moderation analyses. Although moderation effects were not statistically significant across all constructs, simple regression analyses indicated that obstetric violence significantly predicted both postpartum anxiety and depression. This study was the first to examine how self-compassion and medical mistrust relate to the onset of postpartum anxiety and depression following an experience of obstetric violence.
