Study discusses Israel's evasion of UN sanctions against South Africa's apartheid regime, highlighting strategic and community influences.
This study discusses the reasons that led Israel to evade UN sanctions against the South African apartheid regime from 1974 to 1994. While it largely functions as a reinforcement of the existing research, the use of high-ranking Israeli official’s interviews and Archive’s declassified documents provides additional valuable empirical material to the study of Israel–South Africa relations. The findings reveal that, while the need to establish an independent military industry following the 1973 war functioned as a central strategic consideration, the South African Jewish community also played an important role, though primarily only for Israel’s national benefit rather than the community’s own welfare.
