Empirical analysis models the correlation of opening predictability to player rating, suggesting differences by skill level.
This paper presents an empirical, quantitative analysis of strategic determinism duringthe chess opening phase, evaluating a massive sample of 302,812 games indexed from theglobal server repositories of Lichess. The primary objective is to mathematically model thecorrelation between the variability rate of White's first move and the player's cognitive maturity, parameterized via the Elo competitive rating system. Utilizing a custom pipeline programmed inPython, the corpus was processed and segmented into three distinct performance strata:Novices (1000–1200 Elo), Intermediates (1500–1700 Elo), and Advanced (2000+ Elo). Thestatistical findings strongly validate the asymptotic diversification hypothesis: while lower-ratedstrata exhibit highly predictable behavior heavily concentrated on direct attack vectors (1.e4),expert-level players (2000+ Elo) display a substantial frequency dispersion, reducing reliance onhyper-saturated theoretical lines in favor of flank and hypermodern openings (1.d4, 1.g3, and1.c4).
