Qualitative study explores psychological needs and support for individuals awaiting trial, suggesting implications for justice system reform.
Mental health issues are widely reported among prison populations, however, relatively little attention has been given to Individuals Awaiting Trial (IATs). This qualitative study explored the mental health concerns and psychological support needs of IATs from the perspectives of welfare officers and counsellors working in Central Prisons. Data were collected through face-to-face semi-structured interviews and analysed using Reflexive Thematic Analysis following Braun and Clarke’s framework. Three major themes emerged: the mental health challenges experienced by IATs, the existing mental health support within prison settings, and the perceived need for structured psychotherapeutic support. The findings highlight the importance of strengthening mental health support for IATs within the justice system and for the wellbeing of society.
